C Engineer – Remote Contractor

About the role

SME Careers is looking for an experienced C Engineer to work remotely on an hourly‑paid contract. You will evaluate AI‑generated C code, low‑level system designs, and technical explanations, while creating high‑quality reference implementations and step‑by‑step reasoning for complex engineering problems.

Key responsibilities

• Review AI‑generated C code, system designs, and technical explanations for accuracy, safety, and adherence to prompts.
• Identify and document errors in logic, memory handling, concurrency, and performance.
• Generate reference implementations and detailed reasoning for complex problems.
• Fact‑check technical information and write clear, high‑quality explanations.
• Rate and compare multiple AI responses based on correctness and reasoning quality.
• Create detailed prompts and responses to guide AI training content.
• Evaluate and rank AI outputs to improve model accuracy, fluency, and relevance.
• Test AI models for biases or inaccuracies to ensure reliability.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 4+ years of professional experience developing production C software for systems, embedded, or performance‑critical applications.
• Expert‑level proficiency in C, with deep knowledge of pointers, memory management, undefined behavior, and low‑level debugging.
• Strong background in concurrency, operating systems, hardware interaction, and performance optimization.
• Hands‑on experience with build systems, compilers, linkers, and common debugging tools.
• Proven experience conducting detailed code reviews and enforcing coding standards.
• Comfort with version control, CI/CD workflows, and automated testing.
• Minimum C1 English proficiency (written and spoken).
